SSERC is delighted to announce the recipients of the 2026 SSERC Honorary Fellowship Awards, recognising two individuals whose outstanding contribution to STEM education and learning in Scotland has had a significant and lasting impact.
The award of Honorary Fellowship is one of SSERC's most prestigious recognitions. It is presented to individuals who, throughout their careers, have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to STEM learning and training in Scotland while exemplifying the values that underpin the work of SSERC: respect, integrity, innovation, passion and excellence.
The first recipient of the 2026 Honorary Fellowship is Frank Creamer, who served within the Scottish Government Learning Directorate with specific responsibility for STEM education and policy.
Over many years, Frank was the principal link between the Scottish Government and SSERC, providing valued support, guidance and challenge as Scotland sought to strengthen STEM education and improve opportunities for learners and educators alike.
His commitment to STEM learning and training, together with his consistent support for SSERC activities and initiatives, has contributed significantly to the development of STEM education across Scotland. His professionalism, collaborative approach and unwavering advocacy for high-quality STEM learning make him a highly deserving recipient of the SSERC Honorary Fellowship.
The second recipient of the 2026 Honorary Fellowship is Greg Dempster, General Secretary of the Association of Headteachers and Deputes in Scotland (AHDS).
Greg has made an outstanding contribution to early years and primary education in Scotland throughout his distinguished career and has been a passionate advocate for high-quality educational experiences for all learners.
His contribution to SSERC has also been considerable. Until recently, Greg served as Vice Chair of the SSERC Board of Directors and chaired the SSERC Staffing and Remuneration Committee, providing wise counsel, strong governance and steadfast support to the organisation during a period of significant growth and development.
Greg's unwavering support for SSERC, combined with his wider contribution to Scottish education, makes him an exceptionally worthy recipient of the SSERC Honorary Fellowship.
Commenting on the awards, SSERC Chief Executive Alastair MacGregor said:
"The award of Honorary Fellowship represents one of the highest honours that SSERC can bestow. It recognises individuals whose influence and contribution have extended well beyond their immediate roles and whose work has helped shape and strengthen STEM learning in Scotland.
Frank and Greg have each demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Scottish education, supported countless educators and learners, and have been steadfast supporters of SSERC over many years. Their contributions have left a lasting legacy and it is entirely fitting that they are recognised through the award of Honorary Fellowship."
Alistair Wylie, Chair of the SSERC Board added:
"On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to congratulate Frank and Greg on receiving this well-deserved recognition. Both individuals have demonstrated exceptional dedication to improving outcomes for learners and supporting educators across Scotland.
Their values, professionalism and commitment align closely with those of SSERC, and we are proud to welcome them as Honorary Fellows of the organisation."
SSERC warmly congratulates Frank and Greg on receiving this prestigious award and thanks them for their exceptional contribution to STEM education, Scottish education more broadly, and to the continuing success and development of SSERC.
