Retire

It is difficult to believe that more than nine years have passed since Norman joined SSERC on 20 July 2016. During that time, he has become a highly respected and valued member of our team, making a significant contribution not only to physics education but to the wider work and culture of SSERC.

Norman brought with him a wealth of experience from his career as a physics teacher, together with a deep understanding of what teachers, technicians and learners need to succeed. Throughout his time at SSERC, he has combined that expertise with an unwavering commitment to supporting others, whether through professional learning, curriculum development, practical science, or simply taking the time to offer advice and encouragement to colleagues and practitioners.

What has always stood out to us at SSERC  is Norman's professionalism, integrity and quiet determination. He approaches every challenge thoughtfully and thoroughly, never seeking recognition for himself but always striving to achieve the best possible outcome for the learners, teachers and schools we serve. His calm and measured approach, coupled with his extensive knowledge and experience, has earned him the respect of colleagues across Scotland and beyond.

Norman's commitment to service extends far beyond his role at SSERC. His dedication to mountain rescue and the recognition he received through the award of the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2024 speak volumes about his character and his willingness to help others. Whether in the classroom, at SSERC, or on a mountainside, Norman has consistently demonstrated a strong sense of duty, care and public service.

He has been a trusted colleague, a source of wise counsel, and someone whose contribution to SSERC has been immeasurable. While we will undoubtedly miss his knowledge, experience and friendship, we are equally delighted that he now has the opportunity to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

We wish him every happiness, good health, and success in the years ahead, and hope that retirement brings many opportunities to pursue the interests and activities he enjoys most.
