Celebrating STEM leadership: Young STEM Leader Programme Annual Report 2025/2026

SSERC is pleased to publish the Young STEM Leader Programme Annual Report for 2025/2026, celebrating the achievements of learners who are developing their leadership skills and inspiring others through science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

During the year, 4,679 learners achieved a Young STEM Leader Award, with participation across 30 Scottish local authorities. The programme generated an estimated 155,850 hours of STEM leadership activity, creating opportunities for learners to share their interests, build confidence and make a positive contribution to their schools and communities.

Behind these figures are stories of creativity, collaboration and personal growth. The report explores how learners are putting their ideas into practice, developing communication and problem-solving skills, and encouraging others to discover what STEM can offer.

This year also saw the continued development of STEM Leader 7, with 135 learners completing the qualification through projects exploring real-world questions. A new partnership with CREST Awards provides further opportunities to recognise learners’ achievements and support their next steps in STEM.

Equitable access remains central to the programme. Almost a third of delivering centres are in rural and remote areas, while continued support from the Scottish Government and Ocean Winds enables learners across Scotland to participate free of charge.

SSERC thanks the learners, Tutor Assessors, education practitioners, partners and supporters whose enthusiasm and commitment make these achievements possible.

Explore the report to discover the stories behind the awards and the difference STEM leadership is making.
