The investigation of energy changes in chemical reactions is an important part of chemistry. It is carried out using a calorimeter. Purpose built devices are expensive and not commonly found in schools.

This particular version is a microscale version. The reaction vessel is a small 7 cm3 ‘bijou’ with holes in the lid to allow in a digital thermometer and a Pasteur pipette. (Though you can go even smaller, as the photo on the right shows and use the bulb of a pasteur pipette.

This is seated in a beaker full of cotton wool for extra insulation.
