  SSERC offers a vast portfolio of professional learning (PL) programmes for STEM educators in Scotland. Our curricular based PL is offered to everyone: childminders, early years workers, primary and secondary staff as well as lecturers, technicians and those who work with young people in non-formal settings such as youth workers and in the CLD sector.

STEM Engagement

  SSERC offers a wide range of STEM engagement and enrichment programmes to further increase access to, and participation in STEM, well beyond the classroom setting. There are leadership opportunities for young people with the Young STEM Leader Programme as well as programmes to link educators in all sectors with industry partners and STEM Ambassadors to create enhanced STEM learning events for young people in Scotland.

Welding Skills

Sponsorship cost £1000

This course is ideal for teachers and technicians with no prior experience in welding.

It will cover the safe setup and use of Mig, Arc, and spot welding equipment, as well as their associated tools.

It will also develop knowledge of various welding techniques, Personal protective equipment requirements, and specific educational health and safety regulations.

Each participant will spend two full days in our workshop, using welding equipment to complete a range of basic welding tasks, using various welding techniques and joining methods. Demonstrations and one-to-one tutoring will support practical work.

Participants will be able to:

Describe the dangers of fumes, gases and radiation when welding.
Use the correct PPE for welding.
Use welding equipment safely
Set up an arc/MIG welding machine correctly.
Describe & perform various commonly-used welding joints i.e T, Butt and Lap joints.
Understand how poor weld quality can compromise safety.
Test completed welds.
Develop skills and knowledge of safe working practices.

This course is GTCS accredited, i.e., it is aligned to the GTCS Standards for Full Registration and the National Model for Professional Learning.
