Hi, I'm Stuart and a recently employed Science Tech in Edinburgh. I have a background in Oil and Gas production chemistry but no previous experience as a technician in a school. I am wondering if there are any routine checks (weekly/monthly/annually) done by fellow technicians? I'm currently putting together an electronic inventory list as previous has been lost with retirement of previous tech!!

Hello, you moved from the Silver City / Blue Toon to Aul Reekie?

Daily, weekly, monthly and annual checks are many and varied depending on how things were done before.    I think most schools do things differently even in the same authority.

Fume cupboard, gas cylinders, pressure vessels, chemical stocks, checking for degrading chemicals, pencil sharpeners, paper towels, worn and damaged equipment repairs, know morre than teachers, 'cos they ask you whatever they don't know, mind reading skills need developing, going to the chemists to decipher handwriting.

And I am just a Techy Dept Technician

SSERC is your fount of knowledge as is the PrepRoom  (think you been there 🙂 )

Thanks for the reply George (are you Dod on Pep Room?)

Aye, based in Aberdeen previously but now in Edinburgh for last 3 years or so.

Problem I have is that there seems to be absolutely no register of anything bar some MSDS's, a recipe book, delivery notes and an equipment inventory (all hard copies). I do know that there has been a sweep of PAT testing done in March this year with nearly everything  still lying in in another lab/classroom which ive been transferring back to prep room bit by bit.

Generally working on the assumption that "everything is fine" but realise that I need to scratch the surface a bit further.

Cheers for now.

Dod, who this Dod person 😉 😊

You can be fairly sure pressure vessels and fume cupboards are on a contract so someone will turn up to do them, ours do.

Daily checks depend a lot on the capability of the teachers and their organisedness

Remember not to do things like copying, printing of paperwork or the job is yours forever, applies to all other things.

I have learned a lot from the PrepRoom and passed things on to our science dept.

I did 2 years in Physics about 10 year ago so ended up knowing more physics than our Science Tech (not much) so I'm it
