Asthma affects around 20% of people in the UK. Most commonly the effects are relatively minor and by the time they are at secondary school, sufferers will almost certainly have been trained in what to do.

But there are some individuals who are especially sensitive. You should know who these are and take all reasonable precautions to avoid situations that might trigger an attack.

There is generally little that can be actively done in the case of an attack.

If it has been trigggered by exposure to fumes, such as sulphur dioxide, remove the person from the area to fresh air; allow them access to their medication and permit them to take appropriate steps.

Be aware and watch them. If they don’t show signs of recovering very soon, call the first aider.

Remember to pass on information of an attack.
