The Scottish Government STEM Education & Training Strategy (http://www.gov.scot/Resource/0052/00526536.pdf) was launched in October 2017. This strategy aims to build Scotland’s capacity to deliver excellent STEM learning, and to close equity gaps in participation and attainment in STEM. It also aims to inspire young people and adults to study STEM, and to provide a better connection between STEM education and training and the needs of the labour market in Scotland.

The document acknowledges the opportunities afforded through engagement with positive role models in inspiring people to develop their talents. ‘We know that the most effective type of role model interactions with young people are those which involve sustained interactions and coaching and mentoring. We believe that STEM Ambassadors and other role models will continue to have a key role in inspiring young people to develop and sustain their interest in STEM study, jobs and careers’.
