This is a simple experiment in paper chromatography.
Black ink is placed on filter paper (or a coffee filter) and water added dropwise on top of it. the water spreast out from the centre, carrying the pigments, which are separated according to their differing solubilities.
(There are no significant hazards associated with this experiment)
