Probably the most common example of gravimetric analysis is working outthe amount of water in hydrated salts. A method for this can be found here.
But another approach to measuring the loss of mass is to produce a precipitate, dry it and weigh it and look for the increase in mass. Here we share a method for determining the amount of nickel in nickel chloride (though it can be adapted for any nickel-containing solution).
The nickel solution is reacted with an alcoholic solution of dimethylglyoxime (butanedione dioxime) with produces a red precipitate than can be filtered off and weighed.
