SSERC invites Science teachers to take part in this 2-day course focusing on practical activities to support BGE Chemistry and Physics experiences and outcomes outlined by Education Scotland. This course has been developed to support Science teachers who have no specialist background in these subjects and thus would benefit from some assistance in teaching them.
This course will explore a range of practical activities and techniques to support the delivery of BGE Chemistry & Physics so that all science teachers can cover these parts of their BGE curriculum confidently and safely.
Some details of the content can be found under the Outcomes tab below and a full programme will be available in due course.
The course will be held at SSERC, Dunfermline with overnight accommodation provided locally for those delegates that live over 50 miles from SSERC.
Local Authority schools and FE colleges will be entitled to receive an ENTHUSE Bursary of £320 per delegate upon completion of the course. This grant is administered through the National STEM Learning Centre.
Course Dates: 14th – 15th March 2023
Closing Date: 3rd February 2023
For delegates who live more than 50 miles (or 90 minutes on public transport) from SSERC headquarters, overnight accommodation will be available.
The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.
The chemistry sessions will cover SCN-15a&b, 16a&b, 17b, 18a and 19a&b and will include:
- how to carry out some common demonstrations safely and effectively. (Eg alkali metals, methane bubbles, whoosh bottle etc
- hands-on sessions on some of the common experiments carried out at this level (Elements compounds & mixtures, solvents and solubility, states of matter, simple chemical tests, acids, alkalis & indicators and more.
- details of the skills required at this level. Handling chemicals safely, using the Bunsen and other heating equipment, Quickfit glassware, electrolysis etc
In the Physics, topics covered will include:
- The Van de Graff generator (safety, setting-up, safe use in the class, accessories, static electricity in general and fun experiments)
- Multimeters (selection, set-up and use)
- Electrical circuits (series & parallel circuits, measuring current and voltage, simple theory and fault-finding in these circuits) SCN 3-09a
- Electrical equipment (selection, safety, power supplies and batteries)
- Forces (simple experiments to demonstrate tricky concepts, an introduction to Newton’s laws of motion, road safety, using newton balances) SCN 3-08a, SCN 4-08b
- Magnets (selection, safety and usage)
- The electromagnetic spectrum(refraction of light, colour mixing, radiations beyond the visible) SCN 3-11b
A full programme will be available in due course.
