This two day course will involve learning how to safely set up and use Mig, Arc and spot welding equipment and their associated tools. It will also develop knowledge of various welding techniques, Personal protective equipment requirements and specific educational Health & Safety regulations.

This course is ideal for teachers and technicians with no prior experience of welding.

Each participant will spend 2 full days in our workshop using the welding equipment to complete a range of basic welding tasks. Using various welding techniques and joining methods. Practical work will be supported by demonstrations and one to one tutoring.

Accommodation

Overnight accommodation between day 1 and 2 can be provided on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis at a local hotel. Please refer to the cost tab for the residential course fees.

Location

The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the dangers of fumes, gases and radiation when welding.
  • Correctly use appropriate PPE for welding.
  • Use welding equipment safely
  • Set up an arc/MIG welding machine correctly.
  • Describe & perform various commonly-used welding joints i.e T, Butt and Lap joints.
  • Understand how safety can be compromised by poor weld quality.
  • Test completed welds.
  • Develop skills and knowledge of safe working practices.
