Technology Early Career Teacher (ECT) Course
Duration: 2-day programme
Audience: Technology students, NQTs, dual-qualified teachers, and early career educators
 
This course at SSERC HQ is designed to support early career and probationer teachers in Technology to deliver safe, engaging, and high-quality hands-on STEM learning in workshop environments.
The programme develops practical confidence across a wide range of Technology curriculum areas, helping participants strengthen both specialist and non-specialist teaching skills.
The optional residential format provides valuable opportunities for collaboration and professional networking with peers from across Scotland, supporting the development of lasting professional relationships and shared practice.
This course aligns with the GTCS Standards for Full Registration and the National Model for Professional Learning.

Across the two days, participants will engage in practical, workshop-based sessions covering:
  • Woodworking skills and techniques
  • Metalworking processes
  • Basic machining operations
  • Safe use of tools, equipment, and workshop environments

Accommodation

Overnight accommodation between day 1 and 2 can be provided on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis at a local hotel. 

Location

The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.

Course fee payable to SSERC (Residential, with accommodation) – £200.00
Course fee payable to SSERC (Non-Residential, no accommodation) – £70.00

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate core practical skills in woodworking, metalworking, machining, and digital fabrication technologies
  • Apply robust health and safety practices within technology workshop settings
  • Use a range of effective teaching strategies for practical STEM learning, including demonstrations, modelling, and real-world design tasks
