  SSERC offers a vast portfolio of professional learning (PL) programmes for STEM educators in Scotland. Our curricular based PL is offered to everyone: childminders, early years workers, primary and secondary staff as well as lecturers, technicians and those who work with young people in non-formal settings such as youth workers and in the CLD sector.

  SSERC offers a wide range of STEM engagement and enrichment programmes to further increase access to, and participation in STEM, well beyond the classroom setting. There are leadership opportunities for young people with the Young STEM Leader Programme as well as programmes to link educators in all sectors with industry partners and STEM Ambassadors to create enhanced STEM learning events for young people in Scotland.

Promoting Inquiry, Research, and Critical Thinking in Humanities/Social Sciences

This professional learning event, Promoting Inquiry, Research and Critical Thinking in Humanities/Social Sciences, offers educators a structured opportunity to explore innovative approaches to interdisciplinary teaching. Through a series of lectures, workshops and practical activities, participants will examine strategies for developing research skills, scrutinising the role of AI in academic writing, and teaching students to recognise bias and evidence critically. With contributions from university specialists, the course promotes deeper learning and supports teachers in equipping young people with the analytical skills needed for modern classrooms and informed citizenship..

Location

The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.

Learning Outcomes:

Develop interdisciplinary approaches to teaching that connect concepts across humanities and social science subjects, promoting deeper learner engagement and understanding.
Strengthen learners’ critical and research skills by applying practical strategies to teach source evaluation, evidence integration and responsible use of AI tools in academic work.
Enhance classroom practice by implementing methods that foster inquiry, address bias, and build students’ confidence in questioning information.
