Practical Techniques for Biology Teaching (NQT & ECT)
A practical professional learning course to support biology teaching across BGE science, National 5, Higher Biology, Higher Human Biology and Advanced Higher Biology. Participants will explore activities including dissection, a simple immunoassay, colorimetry to investigate enzyme activity and a practical investigation of photosynthesis.
This course is particularly suited to newly qualified teachers (NQTs), early career teachers (ECTs) and practitioners seeking to build confidence with practical biology teaching. It offers opportunities to develop practical skills, explore approaches to classroom delivery and share ideas with biology teachers from schools and local authorities across Scotland.
The course is aligned to the GTCS Standards for Full Registration and the National Model for Professional Learning.
This course aims to support the delivery of practical biology across BGE and senior phase, developing confidence with practical techniques and their application in classroom teaching.
Course Outcomes
On completion of the course, participants will be able to:
Perform a guided dissection, identifying key anatomical structures and relating these to their functions.
Carry out a simple immunoassay and interpret the results using appropriate controls.
Use colorimetry to investigate enzyme activity and interpret the resulting data.
Carry out a practical investigation of photosynthesis, identifying suitable variables and controls.
Select and adapt practical activities for different stages of biology teaching, including demonstrations and scientific enquiry.
Evaluate their own professional learning and its impact on learners.
