This two-day professional learning course, delivered in partnership between SSERC and the Field Studies Council, will take place in Millport an dimmerses teachers in hands-on ecology and environmental sampling. Set on the Isle of Cumbrae, participants explore terrestrial and marine ecosystems while developing the confidence to lead fieldwork safely and effectively with their own learners. Sessions blend practical sampling techniques, laboratory work, and discussion of investigative design, giving teachers a deeper understanding of ecological processes and how to translate them into classroom and outdoor learning contexts. Course activities include small animal and moth trapping, species identifiication, ecological surveying and laboratory environmental analysis.

Learning Outcomes:

1, Participants will gain practical experience of terrestrial, marine, and soil sampling methods and evaluate how to apply these techniques to support learning and teaching in ecology.

2, Participants will develop the skills and confidence to plan, deliver, and assess safe, high-quality field and laboratory investigations that connect ecological theory to real-world environmental issues.
