This course offers a full day of face-to-face professional learning at SSERC in Dunfermline, a follow-up task in school, and a twilight session on Teams.
We will engage with a variety of activities to develop knowledge, skills and confidence in teaching Chemistry at First and Second Level:
Chemical changes (chemical reactions)
Changing state – solids, liquids and gases
Mixing and separating mixtures
Dissolving and separating solutions, including growing crystals
Science Enquiry skills
Key scientific vocabulary
Links to real life, contexts and other areas of the curriculum
You will receive a range of resources and supportive online materials to take back to school, to carry out the follow-up task and support further teaching and learning.
We will come back together for an online session to share learning in schools, reflect on progress and plan next steps.
Lunch and refreshments will be provided at SSERC on 19 March 2027.

SSERC in Dunfermline. The SSERC buildings are at 1-3 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 mins) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours. Free parking is available on-site.

Successful applicants will be required to take part in 10h of professional learning, through attendance at the face-to-face professional learning day at SSERC in Dunfermline (5h30), a follow-up task in school (3h), and a twilight session on Teams (1h30).
The full 10h course costs £40, which includes resources to take back to school, as well as lunch and refreshments on the training day. The course cost has been subsidised by funding.
At the face-to-face training day you will engage with a range of practical activities, reflective discussion, background information, Health & Safety advice and pedagogical approaches to support your teaching.
Take ideas back into school and try these out with learners. Create a short PowerPoint on your activities and reflections, and share with other attendees at the online twilight session.
