Introduction to Forging is a one-day practical course designed to support teachers and technicians in the delivery of metalworking craft activities and relevant aspects of the SQA Practical Metalworking Course.
 
The course focuses exclusively on hot metal forming and provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely set up and use forging equipment within an educational environment.
 
Emphasis is placed on correct working practices, appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and compliance with current educational Health and Safety legislation.
 
This course is suitable for teachers and technicians with little or no prior experience of hot metal forging.
Participants will spend one full day in the workshop using the forge, associated equipment, and tooling.
 
A range of basic forging techniques will be introduced, enabling each participant to produce a completed forged item, supported by a number of practice pieces.

Location

The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours
