This two-day professional learning course is designed to support teachers delivering the Higher Human Biology curriculum by deepening subject knowledge and enhancing practical expertise through immersive, hands-on experiences. Developed and delivered in partnership between SSERC and the University of Edinburgh, the course coincides with two significant milestones: the 60th anniversary of SSERC and the 300th anniversary of the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School.
On Day One, delegates will attend the SSERC Campus in Dunfermline, where they will participate in a range of practical activities including enzymology, electrophoresis, and cardiovascular dissection with the intent of supporting teachers to enrich the laboratory activities and investigations that they deliver to their classes.
Day Two will take place at Edinburgh BioQuarter, home to The University of Edinburgh's Biomedical research facilities and medical school. Sessions will include clinical sign measurement and curriculum relevant cutting-edge research, for example stem cell biology. The day will also include a dedicated session on career next steps including offering guidance on how best to support learners applying to competitive courses such as medicine and awareness of the diversity of opportunities for young people.
All attendees will receive a resource pack of laboratory equipment and reagents, valued at approximately £200, designed to support and enhance the delivery of Higher Human Biology in the classroom.
