This one-day practical course is designed for Technical Teachers and Technicians who use, supervise or maintain abrasive wheel equipment within school Technology departments.
 
The course provides essential health and safety training in the safe selection, mounting, use and maintenance of abrasive wheels, with particular emphasis on workshop equipment commonly found in schools.
 
Participants will develop an understanding of the hazards associated with abrasive wheels and the control measures required to reduce risk. The course will also consider relevant legislation, manufacturer guidance and good workshop practice.
 
Topics covered include:
  • Relevant health and safety legislation and responsibilities
  • Types of abrasive wheels and their applications
  • Abrasive wheel markings, identification and selection
  • Maximum operating speeds and compatibility with machines
  • Safe storage, handling and inspection of wheels
  • Common causes of abrasive wheel failure
  • Wheel mounting procedures and associated checks
  • Flanges, blotters, bushes and securing methods
  • Ring testing and inspection where appropriate
  • Guards, tool rests and other safety devices
  • Setting up and adjusting bench and pedestal grinders
  • Dressing and truing abrasive wheels
  • Personal protective equipment and workshop controls
  • Pre-use checks and routine maintenance
  • Safe working practices when grinding and sharpening
  • Recognition of damaged, worn or unsuitable wheels
 
The course combines theory with practical workshop activities, allowing participants to develop confidence in inspecting, setting up and using abrasive wheel equipment safely.
 
By the end of the course, participants should have a greater understanding of the risks associated with abrasive wheels and be able to apply appropriate control measures and safe working practices within their own school workshop environment.

The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours
