  SSERC offers a vast portfolio of professional learning (PL) programmes for STEM educators in Scotland. Our curricular based PL is offered to everyone: childminders, early years workers, primary and secondary staff as well as lecturers, technicians and those who work with young people in non-formal settings such as youth workers and in the CLD sector.

STEM Engagement

  SSERC offers a wide range of STEM engagement and enrichment programmes to further increase access to, and participation in STEM, well beyond the classroom setting. There are leadership opportunities for young people with the Young STEM Leader Programme as well as programmes to link educators in all sectors with industry partners and STEM Ambassadors to create enhanced STEM learning events for young people in Scotland.

Safety in Microbiology for Schools

Sponsorship cost £1500

This course is designed to further your knowledge of safety procedures and good working practices for microbiological work in an educational environment.

Outcome 1

You will be introduced to microbiological techniques. The lectures/tutorials for this outcome will focus on:

Preparation for microbiological work;
Aseptic techniques;
Preparation and sterilisation of media;
Use of autoclave for sterilisation;
Sub-culturing, slide preparation and staining;
Treatment of spillages and disposal;
Identifying micro-organisms using smears and Gram’s stain.

Outcome 2

In this outcome you will be introduced to the methods for disinfection and sterilisation of microbes. You will also learn how to:

Prepare media;
Perform sub-culturing techniques and keep records;
Identify microbial samples using smear techniques and the Gram’s stain test; use chemical disinfectants;
Autoclave;
Treat spillages and dispose of waste.

This is a SCQF Level 6 course with 3 Credit points.
