J42F 44 Practical Skills

Outcome 1 - Record observations and measurements from four different scientific apparatus. The chemistry apparatus is:

burette, pipette, measuring cylinder, melting point apparatus, thermometer, syringe and balance.

Most of these are quite simple.

Outcome 2 - Carry out practical scientific procedures. Learners are required to perform four practical scientific procedures. The procedures should cover at least one practical from each of the areas of biology, chemistry and physics.

The chemistry ones are:

Testing effect of concentration, temperature or particle size on speed of reaction.

Reaction Rate - Effect of Concentration - one of the old Int 2 PPAs

Reaction Rate - Effect of Temperature - another one of the Old Int 2 PPAs

Measuring the pH of everyday substances

pH testing of solutions - one of the old Int 1 PPAs

Separation of colours in dyes by chromatography

Chromatography of dyes

Black Magic Experiment - a simple experiment involving chromatography.

Constructing an electrochemical cell

Salt and Battery

Testing of foodstuffs for starch and sugar

Starch & Sugar testing in food - one of the old Int 1 PPAs

Distillation of fractions from synthetic crude oil

Distillation of Dyes

Distillation of Crude Oil - A teacher demonstration

Formation and collection of product from a precipitation reaction

Artists Pigments

Identification of salts by flame tests

Flame Colours - several different methods for carrying out flame tests
