This course is designed to provide learners with detailed knowledge and skills for performing practical electrical safety procedures and portable appliance testing. This unit is suitable for learners who are performing electrical safety procedures in an educational context.

Audience

School Technician staff. Access to this unit will be at the discretion of the centre.

Location

The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.

Outcomes

Outcome 1

You will be introduced to electrical safety procedures and regulations. The tutorials for this outcome will focus on:

  • legislation
  • safety procedures
  • record keeping
  • identification of common faults.

Outcome 2

In this outcome you will be introduced to basic electrical theory and portable equipment testing. The tutorials for this outcome will focus on:

  • using ohms law in calculations
  • calculating correct fuse values
  • choosing the correct cable for equipment class
  • correctly wiring a plug top for different equipment classes
  • operating a portable appliance tester (PAT).

EVALUATIONS AND PLENARY

Commitment

Attend on 2 days and undergo both written and practical assessment. It is recommended that a refresher course be undertaken every 5 years.
