This course offers a full day of face-to-face professional learning at SSERC in Dunfermline, followed by 2 hours of self-guided tasks, and a 2 hour session on Teams.

During the course you will engage with a variety of activities to develop knowledge, skills and confidence in delivering aspects of STEM at Early Level. We will explore STEM-based ideas and resources, which could be used to support a range of Es and Os across the curriculum.

Delegates will receive a range of materials and resources to take back to their settings, to support further teaching and learning.

Lunch and all refreshments will be provided at SSERC on 3 May.

Location

SSERC in Dunfermline. The SSERC buildings are at 1-3 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 mins) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours. Free parking is available on-site.

Accommodation

If you are travelling more than 50 miles or 90 minutes, SSERC may be able to support your attendance on this course. Please note any accommodation would result in an additional cost which is not covered by the funding from STEM Learning.

Cost and funding

The course fees are subsidised by funding from STEM Learning. SSERC will support you to complete the application process.

Your setting pays for the course in advance. Once the course activities and evaluations are completed, you will be eligible to be reimbursed via funding from STEM Learning. This subsidy is normally paid by STEM Learning 8 weeks after the course has been completed.

Why Should You Attend?

This course is made up of experiential learning through practical STEM activities, reflective discussion, background information and pedagogical approaches to support learning at Early Level. The course will also facilitate sharing of good practice and networking.

Part 1: Friday 3 May 2024 (full day at SSERC) 09:30 – 16:30

Workshops linking STEM to Literacy, outdoor learning, construction and contexts for Science Enquiry and problem solving at Early Level.

Lunch and all refreshments will be provided at SSERC on 3 May.

Part 2: Self-guided task (2 hours)

Delegates select a task themed around either Family Learning in STEM, responding to learners’ ideas about STEM, or taking their STEM professional learning forward in their setting. Delegates will be asked to share their good practice and next steps.

Part 3: Friday 24 May 2024 (online session via Teams) 14:00 – 16:00

Further STEM professional learning and reflection. Delegates will share their good practice from Part 2 and consider next steps for themselves and their settings following this course.
