This 1-day course focuses on practical activities to support BGE Chemistry experiences and outcomes outlined by Education Scotland. The course has been developed to support Science teachers who have limited specialist background in this subject and thus would benefit from some assistance in teaching it.

This is a one-day course, no accommodation is provided.    

Location

The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.

The sessions will cover SCN-15a&b, 16a&b, 17b, 18a and 19a&b and will  include:

  • how to carry out some common demonstrations safely and effectively. (Eg alkali metals, methane bubbles, whoosh bottle etc
  • hands-on sessions on some of the common experiments carried out at this level (Elements compounds & mixtures, solvents and solubility, states of matter, simple chemical tests, acids, alkalis & indicators and more.
  • details of the skills required at this level. Handling chemicals safely, using the Bunsen and other heating equipment, Quickfit glassware, electrolysis etc
