Scottish Universities Science School (SUSS)

The Scottish Universities Science School (SUSS) is a two-day residential professional development event for secondary science education students across Scotland.

SUSS is hugely popular among initial teacher education (ITE) students, routinely attended by more than 95% of the eligible annual cohort.

SUSS has a positive impact on student teacher subject knowledge, confidence and motivation, but also provides a unique opportunity to explore the value of career-long professional learning and identify sources of effective, high-quality support for student teachers as they enter the teaching profession. It is also hoped that this professional learning event is the first of many engagements between SSERC and those who attend, leading to career long uptake of our broad portfolio of professional learning offers. We are especially keen to see ITE students return in their NQT year to join our Science for Secondary Probationers course; making SUSS an effective starting point in an ongoing relationship between SSERC and student/probationer teachers as they progress in their career.

“Professional development opportunities for ITE students, carefully designed with a strong focus on pupil outcomes which have a significant impact teacher confidence and learner attainment.”

Benefits of attending:

  • explore practical learning activities not usually available during your ITE programme

  • develop expertise in topics outside your specialist science

  • networking opportunities with other students from across Scotland

  • learn how to access ongoing development opportunities on offer from SSERC

  • discover the Young STEM Leader Programme and register to become a trained Tutor Assessor

  • understand how STEM Ambassadors in Scotland can support you and your young people

  • meet a range of SSERC’s partner organisations who also support science educators in Scotland
