This course forms part of a suite of competency based CLPL for school support staff.
You will be introduced to electrical safety procedures and regulations. The tutorials for this outcome will focus on:
- safety procedures
- record keeping
- identification of common faults.
In this outcome you will be introduced to basic electrical theory and portable equipment testing. The tutorials for this outcome will focus on:
- using ohms law in calculations
- calculating correct fuse values
- choosing the correct cable for equipment class
- correctly wiring a plug top for different equipment classes
- operating a portable appliance tester (PAT).

Day 1 morning
Risks and the need for good working practices.
Inspection and test schedules
Demonstrations of formal visual and full inspection tests.
Identifying Class I and II equipment
Damage avoidance to equipment under test.
Day 2 Morning
Assessment preparation and practice tests.

EVALUATIONS AND PLENARY
Attend on 2 days and undergo both written and practical assessment. It is recommended that a refresher course be undertaken every 5 years.
The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.
