This course will provide an introduction to computing science at the First/Second level and evidence why it is so important for our learners. It will provide practical workshops introducing and using micro:bit version 2, allowing delegates to explore the purpose of a micro:bit, how to programme their micro:bit to carry out a range of tasks and how it can enhance computer science outcomes.

Through sessions on Microsoft Teams and self-study gap tasks we will build towards developing the skills and confidence needed to plan, facilitate and evaluate micro:bit projects within their own classes/schools. The course comes with a class set of micro:bit V2 and other materials required for some of the practical workshops.

We will also share our learning via Microsoft Teams and consider a variety of useful websites/apps and other resources to further enhance computing science engagement.

The initial cost of the course is £320, this fee covers a resource box being sent to the school to allow the delegate to take part in the live sessions and the subsequent gap task/ self study activities.

This course is a STEM Learning ENTHUSE bursary course with each setting receiving £320 upon successful completion of the course including all relevant evaluations.

Core outcome covered:

Organiser – Designing, building and testing computing solutions

I can demonstrate a range of basic problem solving skills by building simple programs to carry out a given task, using an appropriate language. TCH 1-15a

I can create, develop and evaluate computing solutions in response to a design challenge. TCH 2-15a

Other Experiences and Outcomes will be covered through the course and these will be referenced when appropriate.

Aim and objectives 

On completion of this training, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to ‘get started’ with teaching micro:bit and how it can be used to enhance creativity, problem solving and collaboration.
  • Embed the micro:bit as a tool for enhancing computing science experiences and outcomes within your setting.
  • Use the MakeCode block coding platform to program the micro:bit to carry out a range of tasks, considering different inputs/outputs.
  • Engage with and use the wide range of resources, activities and tutorials available via the micro:bit online environments.
  • Confidently engage with computing science concepts and pedagogical approaches to enhance the teaching of micro:bit in your setting.

This course will be delivered live via Microsoft Teams (2 twilights 3.45pm – 5.30pm on the dates indicated) with gap tasks assigned through the course classroom.
